At Helm Academy, we are a specialist SEN school providing trauma-informed, therapeutic education for children aged 11 to 16. We create a nurturing and stable environment where every interaction is underpinned by empathy, understanding, and evidence based practice. Our staff are highly trained to recognise and respond to the impact of early trauma, attachment difficulties, and neurodiversity, ensuring every pupil is met with compassion and a tailored approach.
Our unique nurture-model structure supports pupils in remaining with one dedicated teacher and class throughout the day, minimising transitions and reducing anxiety. Lessons are delivered using secondary level content but adapted to each child’s developmental stage and individual needs. We also offer a dedicated nurture class, supported by tools such as the Boxall Profile, for pupils requiring more intensive therapeutic input.
At Helm Academy, we believe in providing a curriculum that meets children where they are, developmentally and emotionally, and empowers them to grow in confidence, skills, and self-worth.

We are a bespoke independent education provider for children with special educational needs, children whose voices may have been lost in the noise of a system that couldn’t meet their needs. Many of our pupils arrive having been let down by mainstream education, told in one way or another that their needs were too complex or their challenges too great. At Helm Academy, we say: Come as you are. We will meet you there.
Our approach is different. We do not view an EHCP as a barrier, but as a blueprint and a guide to unlocking potential. We work hand-in-hand with families and professionals to interpret and action each plan with care and creativity. Our dedicated team of experienced teachers, therapists, and mental health professionals collaborate to create a truly personalised programme of education and care. Our schools are supported by an in-house clinical team, ensuring that every child receives therapeutic support tailored to their needs.
This integration of education and clinical expertise enables us to provide more than a curriculum, it allows us to offer healing, connection, and hope. We help children to re-engage with learning, rebuild confidence, and rediscover their brilliance. And through this, we open new doors, paths that may once have seemed closed.
